In the heart of Berks County, the Animal Rescue League is experiencing an era of compassion and dedication under the leadership of Lisa Malkin as Medical Director and Amara Cordero leading the shelter operations.
Amara, Shelter Director, brings a wealth of experience from a diverse career in banking and finance. With over 15 years in the industry, Amara made a courageous shift to the non-profit sector, ultimately finding her passion in animal welfare. Amara joined the ARL in 2021 as Pet Help Center Lead and in 2023 she was promoted to Client Services Manager before taking the role of Shelter Director.
Embracing the ARL mission, Amara applies her nearly two decades of leadership expertise to make a difference. Beyond her role as Shelter Director, she, along with her family, opens their home to foster kittens and special needs cats, aspiring to match the remarkable efforts of ARL’s CFO, Karen Yost, who has fostered hundreds of kittens along her career. Amara’s commitment extends to her personal life, where she cherishes moments with her family, indulges in camping adventures, and finds solace in the art of painting.
Lisa Malkin, Medical Director, brings a unique blend of skills with over 20 years of experience in veterinary medicine. After graduating from the Mercer County School of Nursing in NJ with a degree in Human Nursing, Lisa’s journey took her from oncology nursing to the specialized realm of veterinary care. Her diverse roles as an Oncology technician, Surgical technician, and eventually in practice management have shaped her into a seasoned professional.
Residing in Lancaster County with her husband, Ron, Lisa shares her home with two rescue dogs, Sophie and Dozer. In her leisure time, she nurtures her love for gardening, explores antique treasures, and relishes moments with her adult children and grandson.
Lisa and Amara exemplify a spirit of leadership at ARL, intertwining their professional expertise with personal passion. As they steer their departments toward new horizons, the community can expect a continuation of ARL’s mission to aid both people and animals in need throughout Berks County.
