ARL Alumni: Nellie Bean

Last October, the Animal Rescue League’s (ARL) Department of Animal Protection responded to a report of an RV traveling through Reading, Pennsylvania, with a large number of dogs being kept in unsanitary conditions. ARL Humane Police Officers removed a total of 44 dogs from the vehicle, launching a coordinated effort to provide the animals with immediate care and safe placement.

Because of the large number of dogs involved, the ARL partnered with the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA) Mainline Animal Rescue (MLAR) to ensure every dog had somewhere safe to go. Through this interagency collaboration, 38 dogs were transferred overnight to the Chester Springs Rescue, while the remaining six dogs entered foster care through the ARL.

Among those transferred was a little dog then known as Bean. Not long after, she met the family who would give her a new name and a new life.

Her adopter recently shared that her mother wasn’t initially looking for another dog, but when Nellie came into the room, it was love at first sight. She was renamed Nellie Bean and quickly became a beloved member of the family. Today, Nellie is described as thoroughly spoiled, accompanying her family on adventures, enjoying weekends in South Jersey, spending time at the beach, and taking plenty of naps. She even has a wardrobe to match her personality.

Nellie’s story is a wonderful reminder of what can happen when animal welfare organizations, law enforcement, foster families, adopters, and the community come together to help animals in need.

Cases of this scale place significant demands on shelter operations, making the support of partner organizations and the community essential. The ARL was grateful for the Good Samaritan who brought the situation to its attention and for the PSPCA’s immediate assistance in helping provide safe placement for the dogs.

Today, Nellie is living the life she deserves thanks to everyone involved and we couldn’t be happier to share her progress as an ARL Alumni. From Bean to Nellie Bean, her journey is truly one of second chances, and finding a family to call her own.
