Halloween is a fun time of year filled with costumes, candy, decorations, and trick-or-treating. While we’re enjoying the festivities, it’s important to note a few potential risks for our furry friends.
From candy and decorations to frequent doorbell ringing, there are several things pet owners should keep in mind to help ensure their pets stay safe throughout the holiday.
Whether you plan to celebrate Halloween at home or head out for the festivities, taking a few precautions can help keep your pets feel safe and comfortable.
Here are some Halloween pet safety tips to help protect your furry friends and allow them to enjoy the holiday as well!
Safe pumpkin decorations
It’s important to be cautious when decorating with pumpkins and to dispose of them properly. Avoid using toxic paints or cleaners that could pose risks to your pets or wildlife. Always supervise your pets around decorations and clean up any scraps that could be harmful.
Candy Caution
After a night of trick-or-treating, everyone is excited to snack on the goodies they collected. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind to enjoy the holiday while keeping our furry friends safe. Many candies, especially chocolate, can be toxic and dangerous to animals, so it’s important to keep them out of your pet’s reach. Not just the candy, but wrappers and treats as well! Wrappers can pose a choking hazard, which is why it’s important to dispose of them properly.
Create a Safe Space
With all the excitement of trick-or-treaters, it’s best to set up a quiet, secure room for your pet away from the door. This will help them feel less stressed and reduce the chances of them darting out when the door opens.
Leash Up for Safety
If your dog is not in a separate room, consider keeping their leash attached to their collar. This way, you can easily grab them if they decide to greet the trick-or-treaters or make a dash for the door.
Beware of Decorations
Setting up decorations is always a fun part of the spooky season! Allowing your creativity to flow, however, it’s important to keep your pets’ safety in mind. Small toys, fake cobwebs, and other decorations can be enticing but dangerous for animals. Keep these items out of reach to prevent accidental ingestion or entanglement.
If Your Pet has a Costume
Our furry friends are more than just our pets, they’re our family! So, of course, we want them to participate in our traditions and celebrations. So, if this Halloween you decide to dress up your furry friends to join in the fun, ensure the costume fits properly and is comfortable! Be cautious of any pieces that can easily be chewed off and/or cause harm. Lastly, ensure the costume doesn’t block your pet’s sight, hearing, breathing, mouth, or movement
