Does your dog like to chew? Most do! So instead of them choosing the furniture or other valuables, we need to find a good alternative. What is safe for dogs to chew on? If anyone has ideas, please post them in the comments section. Just when you think that something is "safe" for your dog, we find that it's either unhealthy or can cause major issues.
Take rawhide. That used to be the best thing to give dogs - it lasted a long time and dogs loved it! But then we learned so much of the rawhide is produced overseas and probably contained arsenic. Ick! And of course, rawhide can cause digestive upset for some dogs. Okay, rawhide gets crossed off the list.
Then along came Greenies. Dogs loved them too! And then we learned that Greenies could get lodged in dogs' intestines. I've heard that they reformulated them but can we trust that? My dog will not just chew on them; he literally breaks off large segments and swallows them whole.
And how about good old-fashioned animal bones? We know that small bones like ribs can splinter. However, larger bones such as femur and shin bones are also capable of breaking off into larger pieces. I know someone whose dog broke a piece off of a femur bone and it lodged in his intestines. $3500 later for the surgery, the dog can no longer chew on real bones.
Nylabones are a good option but some dogs, like mine, are not interested in them. They make a digestible version but, like the Greenies, my dog breaks off pieces and swallows them whole.
What are your suggestions for good chews for dogs?
