This event is an annual tradition at the ARL! We will be open for 12 hours both days with lots of great adoptable pets, auctions, raffles, food and baked goods for sale, and other fun family activities.

Jan Gaul, the artist from Pets on Slate, will be set up on Sunday the 16th from noon until 4:00pm doing live drawings of peoples pets for a $25 donation. Just bring a photo of your pet, he will draw them in ½ hour. All proceeds benefit the ARL.

The Miller-Keystone Bloodmobile will be here on Saturday, June 15 from noon until 3:00pm for blood donations. Please call Kim at 484-269-8630 to make an appointment.

Just for this event, the ARL is offering Salute Our Seniors where we will waive the adoption fee for dogs and cats age 5 years and older. A $10 microchip fee still applies as well as dog licenses if necessary. We have an amazing group of pets just waiting for you!

Mural in the ARL Lobby

The Animal Rescue League gives a huge “thank you” to local artist Terry Flannery and mural sponsor Ginny Rumsey for making our Rainbow Bridge mural possible. Our lobby changed from a great new room to a showplace with the addition of the mural.

The large mural depicts a sampling of our animal companions – various breeds of dogs and cats, horses, ferrets, guinea pigs and even a llama – who have passed on and are waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. According to the poem, that’s the place where our pets romp and play until we get there and are reunited in happiness.

As a fundraiser for the ARL, you can have your pet become part of the mural. The frame around the mural is divided into 84 six-by-six inch squares. For a donation of $300 per square, or two squares for $500, artist Terry Flannery will paint an original portrait of your pet on canvas. Portraits will be painted from a photograph supplied by you. They will then be placed on the frame of the mural for permanent display at the ARL. You will receive a memorial print of the portrait signed by Terry Flannery.

For more information on purchasing a square or two, contact Barrie Pease at 610-373-8830 or email at bpease@dejazzd.com.

PET OF THE WEEK

C55531 Hello, I’m Muffy! I’m a 2-3 year-old spayed female gray DSH. I’m not only beautiful but I’m very sweet. I love all of my cat friends in the colony. I like to snooze under the beds so if you come in to visit, make sure you look under the sheet!

ATTENTION ANYONE WHO WALKS DOGS AT

THE ARL OR WHO IS CONSIDERING IT

Effective January 1, the ARL has upgraded our volunteer dog walking policy. We are now using a color coding system. All volunteer dog walkers will be able to walk the dogs labeled “green.” In order to walk the dogs labeled “purple,” you will need to attend one of our volunteer orientation classes. Once completed, then you will be allowed to walk both “green” and “purple” coded dogs.

Effective 6/13/2013 anyone interested in becoming a purple volunteer dog walker will need to complete the following steps:

·         -    Complete volunteer application.

·         -    Complete volunteer waiver & have photo ID

         copied by front desk staff.

·         -    Attend purple orientation class.

·         -    Have documented 15 hours of walking green

coded dogs after completing the orientation

         class.

·         -     Have received a certificate of purple orientation

         completion signed by staff member.

You must be 18 years of age to become a purple volunteer dog walker. We appreciate your understanding of our policy changes. These changes are being made to ensure the safety of both our dedicated volunteers and our shelter animals.  If you have any questions, please contact Kristi, Volunteer/Program Coordinator.

The next orientation classes will be held on Tuesday, July 9 at 6:30pm. Please email Kristi at krodriguez@berksarl.org to register for one of them. All attendees must be over 16 years of age.

This program is being started for the sake of both our volunteer walkers and our animals. We appreciate your understanding and your continued dedication to our animals here at the shelter!

ANNOUNCING A NEW ARL PROGRAM!

KENNEL COMPANIONS!

The ARL is pleased to announce a new program called Kennel Companions.  The goal of this program is to give special attention to those dogs who have been waiting longer than others for an adoptive home.  Each dog is assigned a volunteer who is responsible for working one-on-one with the dog for socialization and behavioral training. In order to qualify to be a Kennel Companion, the volunteer must commit to working with the dog at least three times a week. We are looking for committed individuals who will work with their dog until it is adopted or can be placed in a foster home!

Please read the Kennel Companions Program overview for more detailed information:  Overview

If you wish to sign up, please complete the application and email it to Kristi at krodriguez@berksarl.org. After we have reviewed your application, if we feel as though we have a dog to match with you, we will contact you.
